Rouen - a spectacular city

October 3, 2021 - Sunday

View Brittany and Normandy on Beausoleil's travel map.

Woke to rain with rain predicted all day. We drove into Rouen for Mass at the Cathedral and Google managed to get us directly to Cathedral parking. We walked a couple blocks to the Cathedral and entered. When the organ started, the stones of the church vibrated. It’s an amazing instrument! The choir was excellent and we had a bishop and at least four priests celebrating. It was a wonderful experience and after Mass, we walked around the church taking pictures. They are currently celebrating Dupré’s 100th so music was front and center.

We walked to the Gros Horloge and got photos and then started our restaurant search ending at Restaurant Guillaume near the very modern Jeanne d’Arc church and the central market. Ed ordered magret de canard and I got the confit de canard with a magnificent salad. I got the last fondant au chocolat so Ed got a crème brulée. Both were good but my fondant was incredibly dark chocolate and super delicious. Walked over to look at Jeanne d’Arc’s church which is spectacular with the modern architecture and the ancient stained glass windows. It’s a great combination. The beautiful stained glass windows from 1520-1530 were rescued from the church of Saint Vincent that was destroyed in World War II. I love them in this very modern church because a lot is at eye level so you can really see them in great detail.

Then we walked down to Monoprix and got a wine bottle opener. This is the second gite with no adequate way to open wine . . . in France!

We walked back, around the Cathedral and on to Église St. Maclou and entered. They’ve done a lot of renovation in sixteen years and it was lovely. They were having a very interesting art exhibit, mostly sculpture, in the church. On to the Abbey Church of Saint Ouen where they haven’t taken very good care of the formerly magnificent abbey church and it is undergoing copious renovation and was quite bare. An organist was giving a recital to an audience of four, plus those of us who wandered through. Not exciting, but nice.

Stopped for our daily baguette and started home. We ran into rain and I got rainbow photos. It’s been mostly sunny since this morning but showers, some heavy, keep popping up. Heading to Étretat tomorrow and hoping for sun.

Beautiful cathedral and churches. I love all the stain glass, such wonderful colours. Rouen looks like a wonderful place to visit.

Hi Irene. Rouen is indeed beautiful. You could easily spend a week or more there. We didn't begin to explore the entire city. There is a lot of history.

That interior stairway in the cathedral is stunning! And I find the modern Église Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc beautiful too, and what a wonderful idea to incorporate the rescued stained glass!

We loved the ancient stained glass in the very modern church. It was a wonderful idea. The best part is the glass is low enough you can get right up close and see the details. There are all kinds of tiny stories told in the backgrounds.
